Denny's Commercial Mentioning Second Amendment Earns Conservative Praise

We are always amazed (and sometimes delighted) by the inability to recognize irony. In what appears to be an enthusiastic, if potentially misguided response to brand-messaging, conservative groups across America are throwing their support behind Denny's for an ad for their "Tour of America" campaign. They seem to think the ad shows that Denny's believes the right to bear arms is "what makes America the greatest country in the world."

As AdWeek notes, this sudden swell of support seems to be rooted in the same soil as this week's widespread conservative criticism of Oreo's nod to Pride Week. Offended commenters went ballistic with threats to boycott Oreo and its parent companies for supporting something they didn't agree with. Which makes right-wing blog Conservative Refocus News' commentary on the matter stand in pretty hilariously stark ironic contrast:

It probaby won't be long before a bunch of radical, Obama loving, America hating Liberals begin protesting this particular All-American Restaurant for actually celebrating what makes America great.

Over on DefensiveCarry.com, a firearm enthusiast forum, there seems to be debate raging over whether Denny's mention of the Second Amendment is a pro or a con, considering that they were sort of joking about it. This polarizing discussion currently has forum members split between "Pro" (42%) and "Who Cares?" (32%).

We are certainly not suggesting that Denny's doesn't believe America is a great country, but rather that the man in the commercial was probably going to say that what makes America great is "the fact that there are meat, potatoes AND cheese in the sandwich I'm about to shove in my face." That is, before his patriotic (and highly articulate) children and fellow patrons made him feel sheepish.

Google Adds Movie Purchases, TV Shows, And Magazines To Google Play

_MGT4019The Google Play store already had thousands of movies for rent, as well as millions of songs from major labels available for purchase. It also had a pretty extensive collection of e-books -- the largest in the industry, Google claims. But it's bringing even more content to its Google Play store, with the added availability of movie purchases, TV shows, and magazines on Android devices. That includes the ability to purchase movies -- not just rent them -- and have them available whenever users want to view them. In addition to movies, Google Play is adding TV shows, allowing users to purchase individual episodes or even full seasons of their favorite shows. While e-books have been popular, Google Play didn't previously offer access to magazine titles, but it's changing that through partnerships with some major magazine publishers.

Microsoft brings true, background multitasking to Windows Phone 8

Microsoft brings true, background multitasking to WIndows Phone 8

Well, Microsoft has officially left Apple as the only player in the Mobile field to not support real multitasking. With the next version of Windows Phone, background multitasking will be opened up to all devs, thanks to libraries provided directly by Redmond. During today's presentation two different background tasks were demoed, VoIP and location. The VoIP integration allows users to have calls come in, preferably via Skype if Microsoft has its way, without having the app running in the foreground and have them appear the same as a standard phone call. While watching for incoming calls is nice, a more commonly used feature is location monitoring. Now apps will be able to monitor location in the background while you perform other tasks. One by one, Microsoft is checking off boxes on our list of complaints about Windows Phone.

Microsoft brings true, background multitasking to Windows Phone 8 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 20 Jun 2012 13:47:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

OfficeTime

Freelancers, contractors, and others in the self-employed ranks grapple with the administration and paperwork that comes with running a small business. OfficeTime ($47; available for Windows and Mac) is a small business owner's best friend. This highly practical yet relatively simple program helps SMBs keep track of their billable hours and other expenses, as well as generating invoices for their work. OfficeTime tracks how much time you spend on various projects and tasks while you're working, and it shows the minute-by-minute costs as they accumulate, or with numbers rounded however you choose. Slightly larger businesses can even use OfficeTime for team projects.

OfficeTime is the kind of app that pays for itself in no time?and would still do so if it cost twice as much. Nimble, inexpensive, and smartly customizable, OfficeTime belongs on every SMB's computer.

How It Works and Features
What makes OfficeTime so beneficial for small businesses is it automates the tedious parts of keeping track of billable hours. The app starts you off with categories, projects, and line items. Each project contains line items, and each line item can be assigned to a category. You can assign projects to categories, too.

For every line item, OfficeTime gives you a record button, which you press when you're ready to start working on that task. The app then counts the minutes and hours you spend working that task until you press stop.

When you begin recording a new task in OfficeTime, the app automatically pauses the actively recorded project, rendering it impossible for you to accidentally bill two clients or record time for two tasks simultaneously. The how-to for overriding this setting is found among OfficeTime's daily tips (recommended reading for sure), which pop up when you launch the app.

For line items that aren't billed by time, you can manually add a price to the entry. In fact, you can manually change any field?date, time, cost, notes?at any time for any item. Another feature I love is a simple built-in reminder that you can set to say anything and program to alert you in however many minutes you like.

To use OfficeTime effectively, you do need to spend a few minutes making sure you have a clear understanding of how your business projects are organized. Established professionals likely have this tacit knowledge at their fingertips, but in my testing (and, granted, I'm not self-employed), I puzzled through a few trial-and-error moments trying to determine how to accurately categorize my made-up work. However, OfficeTime is nimble enough to let you correct your missteps quickly as you go.

At any time, you can switch from the line item view to a more visual graph, which shows where you've spent your time on the project. Here is where you'll find invoicing features as well. With the touch of a button, you can generate an invoice?with a unique job/invoice number that you create and which OfficeTime carefully tracks and helps make sure you don't repeat?for the work performed. For duplicate entries and previously billed hours, OfficeTime has you covered. The app has a feature that can hunt down both of those problems. Need to export those reports? OfficeTime can spit out plain text files, but unfortunately not spreadsheets, which prevents you from importing data from OfficeTime to another system easily.

OfficeTime can generate team reports, too, based on the work of multiple employees, although I did not test those features for this review.

Visual Appeal
While OfficeTime looks a little old-school (remember those shades of gray and blue used on all software pre-1999?), it is actually very sensibly designed. You can open multiple windows to see various projects at once, and windows resize wonderfully to the most minimal view, letting you keep an eye on billable time while also not being distracted by its prominence.

When I first started testing OfficeTime, it took me a little while to understand how to open new windows for the projects I wanted. The command for "new window" merely duplicates the active window (confusing). To change its contents, you have to then select from a dropdown menu in the new window the project you want to see. The flow is unconventional, but the learning curve is small. Do it a few times, it you'll forget it was ever an oddity.

SMB's Best Friend
OfficeTime couldn't cover the bases more thoroughly, but a few aspects really prove it has the SMB audience at heart. The one-time price of $47 is extremely reasonable, and there are no tacked on fees for extra features or subscription services. Once you buy the product, you own and locally store it and all the data it holds. OfficeTime also contains excellent customization options, letting you alter invoice templates, the order in which information displays, and any single field in any project.

OfficeTime wins an Editors' Choice for small business software because it's inexpensive, highly useful, and downright practical. Every small business owner needs an app this good. ?

Emergency officials in Hawkesbury, Ont., responded to the blaze at the Place Mont-Roc around 9:30 p.m.

The home to 90 residents was evacuated, but Anne-Marie Bonin, 84, and Jean-Paul Bonin, 87, were caught inside and died.

No other residents were injured in the fire.

Some of the residents were taken to hospital for precautionary measures, and more than 30 others - those not sent home with family members - were taken to a nearby retirement home.

Report: Pakistan Blocks Twitter Over Blasphemous Content, Facebook Complies? [Update: Back Up]

pakistan mountainsAnother day, another example of a country making it harder for its people to use the web and some of its most effective channels of communication? There are reports coming in from Pakistan that it has become the latest country to ban the use of Twitter. Update: it's now back up -- new post explaining development here. Read below for full story. According to the blog Dawn, the chairman of Pakistan's telecommunications authority has today imposed the restriction because of blasphemous content: it reports that Chairman Mohammad Yaseen blocked the site today "because Twitter refused to remove material related to a competition on Facebook to post images of Islam?s Prophet Muhammad." Facebook, apparently, has complied with the request, says the blog. Others are now starting to report the same, and below the break we have a screenshot of how accessing the site looks from one of our readers in Lahore who says he "cannot access the site at all." Getting blocked in Pakistan, if true, is particularly ironic because the two, paired up, played a major role in one of the most important news events to be broken in recent history: the raid and demise of Osama bin Laden, which was tweeted by?at least two people?watching the raids as they happened in the mountains of the country.

Best Buy sells almost as many iPhones as Apple store, AT&T and Verizon sell way more than both

A survey of iPhone shoppers from December last year through February, reveals that 13% had bought their iPhones from Best Buy, while 15% had purchased theirs directly from Apple. Of course, carriers brought in the lion's share of sales; AT&T sold to 32% of those surveyed, Verizon claimed 30%, and Sprint a less-than-impressive 7%. The survey, conducted by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, also showed that online stores only accounted for 24% of sales, with regular brick-and-mortar establishments taking up the remaining 76%.

faithtuppers - Customer Service Pitfalls Part 3

Merchant Services Customer Service Blog Image

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 by Steve Myers in Customer Service

The Official Merchant Services Blog?finishes its titanic trilogy on the affect?Customer Service?can have on a business. In our first blog we discussed anecdotal evidence and how it pertains to the perception of service and what can be learned from those anecdotes. In our second blog we took at look at the numbers, examining charts of data to determine a measured impact that customer service has on a business. The combination of strong anecdotal evidence and detailed charts demonstrated how integral quality customer service can be to a business? financial success. Today we?re going to delve into the tips that get offered regarding inferior customer service ? both tips on how customers can deal with customer service they find lacking and tips on how businesses can improve customer service that their customers find lacking.

I got onto this topic recently because of an online discussion that suggested that customers weren?t worth the effort of listening to their complaints. That discussion was sparked from??The story of Jennifer Hepler found on The Mary Sue. It brought up the concept of gamer entitlement and video game customers going too far in their negative complaints to video game developers.?Added to that was this Forbes article about? The Myth of Gamer Entitlement. This really created a framework where customer complaints were presented as too much hassle for game companies to listen to. So the game companies would place customer service extremely low on their priority list.

Host Merchant Services blog image for customer service.

I really have issues with that concept. It makes no sense to me.?Customers and?quality customer service?are extremely valuable to long-term business. So I set about to prove how valuable customer service can be for a business. After seeing the anecdotal evidence and the numerical data stack up, it?s quite clear that quality customer service has an impact on a business? bottom line. Good customer service helps retain customers. Happy customers also give a business good word of mouth advertising ? the most powerful and effective advertising a business can receive. Good customer service leads to high customer loyalty. High customer loyalty gives your business higher sales and a stronger brand identity.

What to do if all is not Well?

So let?s bring this back around to what started me on this line of thinking: Difficult Customers. The strategy that some video game companies are using to ?deal? with the difficult customers was to launch a bit of an online campaign through gaming sites and other avenues to paint those difficult customers as unreasonable, and set the company up as a victim of their irrationality. From what I?ve seen and read of that option, the negativity has simply bred more negativity. Making the customers even more difficult and a lot of bad word of mouth has started to seep into the reputation of the company hurting their brand. So instead of creating an antagonistic atmosphere with difficult customers, I did a little research and found some tips and advice on how to deal with difficult customers and turn it into a positive.

Merchant Services image on Bad Customer Service

The Customer?s Side

To get a handle on difficult customers I think it?s important to understand the perspective of the customer. This article by Mind Your Decisionsis amazing at giving us insight into that perspective ? and it gives consumers a series of tips on how to get the service they desire from bad customer service situations. It hinges on the premise that for customers to get what they want from a business? customer service department, their strategy should be reasonably unreasonable. It states that being reasonable with bad customer service usually leads to the customer not getting what they want as they let the business continue to ignore their issue. It then states that being unreasonable with bad customer service also misses the mark as making a ruckus may get you what you want, but may leave you feeling like you made a mountain out of a molehill. So it advocates a strategy of being reasonably unreasonable: Holding firm, continually going after what it is you want from the company but not raising a ruckus while you follow that path. The article is focused on giving customers advice on how to get businesses to respond to your desire for customer service: ?When dealing with bad service, one of the easiest ways to be reasonably unreasonable is to explain you are a frequent customer and that you would like a full cash refund. Cash, unlike in-store discounts, can be used at competitors.?This small request quickly gets the attention of managers who scramble to keep you happy. You may end up accepting an in-store discount, but it will likely be much larger because you started asking for cash.?

Articles like this are important to be aware of when you?re planning ?your own customer service protocols. You find again and again that the advice offered to consumers is to not back down. To continue to push for service. To be difficult. Sure, there are always going to be a tiny selection of customers that are the exceptions to the rule ? ones that are difficult to be difficult, ones that thrive off of confrontation, and ones that simply want to try and take advantage of your customer service to get something for nothing. But these are the rare exceptions. Most of the time you are dealing with a customer that feels like they got a defective product or did not get the value of their purchase. They are seeking some sort of compensation, some understanding and some assistance. And because they feel justified in their crusade, they are going to feel entitled to service. They aren?t the unreasonable villains that the ?gamer entitlement? tag suggests they are.

Host Merchant Services image on customer service, with bell ringing.

The moral of this story is a customer that wants a refund can be difficult about it. But can be turned back into a loyal customer if they receive understanding and compensation. It doesn?t even have to be in the form of a refund. But ignoring them or antagonizing them is only going to do more damage to your business and its reputation than the refund is usually worth. Most difficult customers aren?t that difficult once you initiate customer service that actually addresses their issues and their concerns.

Customer Service Tips

This article from Customer Service Manager offers five tips for dealing positively with difficult customers. Those five tips all hinge on engaging the customer?s emotions. As the article states in its conclusion: ?Make no mistake about it; customers, be they internal or external, are primarily driven by their emotions. It?s therefore important to use human responses in any interaction particularly when a customer is upset or angry. If customers like you and feel that you care, then they?re more likely to accept what you say and forgive your mistakes.?

The tips break down to:

  • Have a thick skin. Be aware the customer is going to be angry and upset and don?t let that get to you.
  • Listen. Listen to what they have to say.
  • Don?t use the word sorry. Sorry, the article says is overused and has little impact with difficult customers.
  • Show empathy. The customer is upset and empathy will help mollify their anger.
  • Build a rapport. While empathizing with the customer opens the door for you, building a rapport gets you to your destination ? customer service.

?

Host Merchant Services blog image on customer service and help desk analysis.

Most other lists I?ve found on how to deal with difficult customers breaks down to a similar set of tips. The important tips that I repeatedly ran into were all a variation on listening to the customer, showing them understanding and not letting their anger get to you. It all comes back to giving the customer your time, your ear and your energy. Giving them the attention they need to service them and address their issues. You do this and most of the customer service complaints you get are defused. You turn many of these customers into loyal fans of your business who will turn around and spread the news that you give excellent service. You attract more business and build a reputation for your business.

For me, the bottom line of customer service is this: There?s no such thing as gamer entitlement. Those gamers are customers who purchased your product and they are entitled to quality customer service. If you run a video game company you should beat the pants off of your competitors by being one that gives quality customer service. You?ll set yourself apart from the ones that are painting their own customers as the villains and themselves as the victim of a group of people who simply want what they paid for.

lines and colors :: a blog about drawing, painting, illustration, comics ...

Picturing Spring: An Equinox Celebration on Tor.com: Abbott Handerson Thayer, Stephen Hickman, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, N.C Wyeth, J.C. Leyendecker, Walter Everett, Daniel Ridgeway Knight, John William Waterhouse
In what I hope will become a regular feature, Irene Gallo, art director of Tor, Forge, Starscape and Tor.com, has reprised the idea behind her post from last December, Picturing Winter, a Solstice Celebration, as Picturing Spring: An Equinox Celebration.

The basis of the original post was to ask several illustrators and art directors to suggest some favorite images of winter, created by themselves, other contemporary artists or artists from history.

The result was a treat, as I mentioned in my post about it, and though it was meant as a one-off article, Gallo decided to continue because, in her words, ??the post was too much fun to put together and I learned way too much not to try it again?.

I think her readers would agree on both counts.

This time around the subject is spring and the vernal equinox, and the result is a similarly wonderful, and enlightening, array of illustrations, concept art, museum and gallery art from both contemporary and historic sources.

Readers familiar with Lines and Colors know that I love this kind of mix of styles, genres and centuries, and I was delighted when Gallo asked me to participate in this round.

My suggestions were two images by Daniel Ridgeway Knight and one by John William Waterhouse (images above, bottom three).

The overall mix in her post is a treat, and the article includes comments by the participants and Gallo on the artists and works chosen. You may find some beautiful works and artists that are new to you.

The images in the post are linked to larger versions, and you will find it worth looking up artists with whom you?re not familiar to find more of their work.

Don?t forget to click on the names of the illustrators, gallery artists and art directors who made the suggestions to follow back to their own sites and blogs; in addition to the artists suggested, they themselves represent a ?tip of the iceberg? dive into a wealth of dazzling artwork.

Microsoft patent application gives us hope for head-mounted successor to Virtual Boy

Patent applications are full of hope and broken dreams, as it's far too easy to let a rampant imagination read beyond the layers of patent-attorney penned boilerplate. In the realm of the realistic, this application from Microsoft concerns a head-mounted display with a narrow-beam laser packing two dilation optics (us neither). If you then variate the diffraction grating between the two eyepieces, you create a three-dimensional virtual reality display. As much as we'd like to prowl the digital touchlines in Fifa Soccer with the Xbox equivalent of the Virtual Boy, it's more likely that we'll be stuck prowling our couches for years to come.

Health & Fitness: Self Improvement

The problem with being a leader is that it can be often a burden. This is because it?s a hard thing to be responsible for other people. Most people try to avoid responsibility as much as they can. However, sometimes, you?re drafted into being the head honcho of a team. It can be a small group of people or maybe even an entire department, but the pressure is all the same for you to lead them to success. This pressure to succeed is why leadership development programs are highly in demand nowadays.

Leadership development may sound like some archaic business buzzword but all it boils down to is that leadership can be trained into people. Of course, this is a fact ? leading people is a skill like any other and can be taught. Some people are naturally skilled in it but not everyone can be Napoleon or Alexander the Great. Leadership development seeks to inculcate skills and values that will help you lead successfully. How does it do this?

First of all, leadership development focuses on planning. This is why you notice that most programs like these emphasize you to develop a personal plan for yourself. Plans are generally very helpful ? like the old saw says ?Measure twice and cut once?, it means that you have a clearly defined path to follow. This way there will be no confusion on the way you have to go to improve yourself.

Next, leadership development emphasizes strict self-assessment. People often say that they know enough about themselves but that is, most of the time, wrong. This is because most people like to think well of themselves ? they don?t like to get into the nitty-gritty details of their personality. This is why self-reflection is often unpopular ? people would rather point out other people?s faults than having their problematic traits pointed out to them.

Leadership development counselors are strict about you identifying your faults because it will help you deal with them in the future. People need a leader who can inspire them to do their best. A fumbling idiot or an arrogant micromanager is not an inspirational sight. The ability to recognize the problematic aspects of your personality and to either minimize or remove them is one of the hallmarks of good leadership.

Finally, leadership development isn?t all just about navel-gazing. It?s also about learning skills that are helpful in your job as leader. Some of these skills are administrative ones like balancing a schedule or writing an assessment report. Some of them are about interpersonal skills; part of being a good leader is being able to relate to your subordinates in a way that does not stifle them. Learning how to establish a positive rapport with your team is something that is very useful for a leader. Leadership development also teach you how to bring out the best in others ? coaching and developing talent is an integral part of making a world-class team.

That?s what leadership development is all about in the end ? being able to do your best and to be able to get the best out of others.

Romney tells Obama to fire 'gas hike' advisers

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is telling President Barack Obama to fire his top energy advisers.

The Republican primary front-runner is pointing specifically at Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Lisa Jackson, the Environmental Protection Agency administrator.

Romney calls them Obama's "gas hike trio" and is accusing them of "working like crazy" to raise gas prices.

Republicans are blaming Obama for the higher gas prices. Newt Gingrich has promised to establish $2.50-a-gallon gasoline if elected.

Energy prices are tied to some forces outside a president's control, including global demand, speculation, and Middle East conflicts.

But Romney said the Obama advisers should either resign or be fired.

He spoke at a campaign stop Saturday evening in Illinois ahead of Tuesday's high-stakes primary.

Senators push Russia trade restriction replacement

(AP) ? Four senators say they will back an Obama administration push to repeal restrictions on trade with Russia, but only if the restrictions are replaced by legislation sanctioning Russian officials for human rights violations.

The lawmakers from both major parties outlined their position on abolishing the 1974 Jackson-Vanik law in a letter Friday.

The Obama administration is seeking the repeal urgently so that U.S. companies will not lose out after Russia joins the World Trade Organization this year. It has opposed linking repeal to legislation targeting Russian officials.

But the support of senators from both parties would boost prospects for the Senate to repeal the law.

The letter was signed by Sens. Benjamin Cardin, D-Md., Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., John McCain, R-Ariz., and Roger Wicker, R-Miss. The inclusion of McCain, a strident critic of Russia's record on human rights and the rule of law, signals an opening for the administration, if it is willing to accept the sanctions legislation.

Cardin is the author of the sanctions bill, called the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act. McCain also is a sponsor. It would subject Russian officials to travel bans and bar them from financial transactions in the United States.

Jackson-Vanik denies normal trading relations with communist countries that restrict emigration or punish those trying to leave the country. The amendment was introduced to pressure the Soviet Union to allow Jews to emigrate.

The United States has waived its application since 1994 and proponents of repeal argue that keeping it would only punish U.S. companies that want to operate in Russia. But others argue that the U.S. should maintain a linkage between trade with Russia and human rights issues.

Passage of the Magnitsky bill would open a new irritant in U.S. relations with Russia, a point acknowledged by the four senators.

"While some in the Russian government may be upset if the United States adopts the Magnitsky bill, we believe most Russians will be happy to see us deny the most abusive and corrupt individuals in their country the ability to travel and move their ill-gotten wealth overseas," the senators wrote.

The letter was written to Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., who chairs the finance committee and is shepherding the bill through the committee.

The Magnitsky bill is named for Sergey Magnitsky, who died of an untreated illness in late 2009 after spending almost a year in a Russian jail. Investors working in Russia have said the lawyer's death and allegations of torture highlight corruption in the judicial system.

The prospects for repeal of Jackson-Vanik in the Senate or the House of Representatives remain unclear, either alone or in combination with the Magnitsky bill.

(AP Photo/The Star-Ledger, John Munson, Pool, file)

NEW BRUNWSICK, N.J. (AP) ? Dharun Ravi looked composed for an 18-year-old wearing shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops when he was brought into a police station for questioning on Sept. 23, 2010 about his Rutgers University roommate, Tyler Clementi.

Word had spread that Ravi used his webcam to view Clementi in a private moment with another man, just days before Clementi committed suicide.

As he was questioned, Ravi looked directly at the investigator who grilled him and accused him repeatedly of lying. He talked quickly but his voice didn't trail off.

Now, he and his lawyers must decide whether he should take the witness stand in his defense and address jurors directly. They'll have to weigh whether they think adding his voice ? and giving prosecuting lawyers a chance to cross-examine him ? will help his case or hurt it.

Ravi, now 20, is charged with 15 criminal counts including invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and attempting to cover his tracks by tampering with evidence and a witness.

Clementi jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River on Sept. 22, 2010.

Testimony in the trial has taken 11 days so far. Ravi sits about 20 feet from jurors ? wearing a suit, his formerly unkempt hair trimmed neatly ? but they have not heard him utter a single word in person.

Between his words and those of others, a portrait of him has been painted for jurors.

Born in India, he came to New Jersey with his family as a young child. He and his family live in the upscale central New Jersey community of Plainsboro.

The son of a computer software firm executive, he has designed some software on his own.

The younger Ravi had a custom-made computer that functioned on both Microsoft and Apple Macintosh operating systems. That technical accomplishment ? while not unheard of ? impressed the detective assigned to examine the machine.

He was gregarious and good enough at calculus that other students came to him for help.

In high school, he ran track and played ultimate Frisbee, then joined the disc team when he got to Rutgers. He was proud when he bought new cleats for the sports, describing them in a text message to a friend as "purple and flashy."

At Rutgers, he planned to major in economics. The university assigned him and Clementi to be roommates at random. They didn't meet before they moved in at the end of August.

When he met with police, he was asked to explain a Twitter post in which he said: "Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 pm and 12."

On the video, he said he meant that sarcastically. "When I'm uncomfortable about something," Ravi explained during the interrogation, "I joke about it."

To convict him on the most serious charge ? bias intimidation ? prosecutors will need to convince the jury that he acted out of animus against gays. He faces up to 10 years of prison if he's convicted of bias intimidation, which is considered a hate crime in New Jersey. Most people convicted of the other charges he faces don't get jail time.

Throughout the trial, defense lawyers have worked hard to show that he didn't.

As prosecutors called college students to testify, defense lawyers asked them all a variation of the same question: Did he ever say anything bad about gays? In each case, the answer was "no."

But there was a bit more to it than that. Some students said Ravi told them he was "uncomfortable" having a gay roommate.

The defense began presenting its side of the case on Friday by calling seven men to testify. All of them are friends ? and most current or former business associates ? of Ravi's father.

Defense lawyer Philip Nettl asked each of them if Ravi ever said anything derogatory about gay individuals or gays in general.

In each case, the men said no.

Then, First Assistant Middlesex County Prosecutor Julia McClure began questioning them.

All said they had never seen his Twitter posts, and exchanged texts or instant messages with him. And each of them said homosexuality was never discussed in their conversations.

"Why would that come up?" asked one of the men, Anil Kappa, a business partner of Ravi's father.
