Online petition asks Apple for 'ethical' iPhone

By Suzanne Choney

An online petition asking Apple to "address dangerous conditions in factories" making the next iPhone has gotten 35,000 signatures in the first 24 hours of the effort.

?I use an iPhone myself. I love it, but I don?t love having to support sweatshops, and neither do millions of other Apple consumers,? said Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, executive director of the group behind the petition, SumOfUs.

The working conditions at Apple factories in China were detailed in a recent New York Times article. In the article, a former Apple executive is quoted as saying, ?We've known about labor abuses in some factories for four years, and they're still going on?Why? Because the system works for us.?

SumOfUs, which describes itself as a "movement of consumers, workers and shareholders speaking with one voice to counterbalance the growing power of large corporations," said it started the petition because the timing is right, with a new iPhone, called the iPhone 5 for now by many, in the works.

"Right now we have a huge opportunity as ethical consumers: The launch of the iPhone 5 later this year will be new Apple CEO Tim Cook?s first big product rollout, and he can?t afford for anything to go wrong ? including negative publicity around how Apple?s suppliers treat their workers," the group says on its site.

"That?s why we?re launching a campaign this week to get Apple to overhaul the way its suppliers treat their workers in time for the launch of the iPhone 5."

Apple, contacted for comment by msnbc.com about the online campaign, has not yet responded; if the company does, the post will be updated.

Apple CEO Tim Cook did send an email to employees after the New York Times story was published, saying in part, "We care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain ... Any accident is deeply troubling, and any issue with working conditions is cause for concern. Any suggestion that we don?t care is patently false and offensive to us. As you know better than anyone, accusations like these are contrary to our values. It?s not who we are."

Said Stinebrickner-Kauffman: "Apple?s enforcement of razor-thin profit margins at suppliers invites?? and may even force?? them to slash workers? rights. But Apple is going to have much bigger longer-term problems than paying a few extra dollars for its products if it loses its luster with ethical consumers.?

(AP) ? European leaders will try to come up with ways to boost growth despite steep budget cuts across the continent when they meet in Brussels on Monday.

The 27 heads of state and government will get a taste of the popular frustration with austerity and high unemployment as they try to get to the summit in a city paralyzed by strikes.

While the official theme of Monday's meeting is boosting growth and jobs, the elephant in the room will be Greece.

Leaders aren't expected to make any decisions on a new massive bailout for Greece until international debt inspectors have issued a new report on the country's finances.

Athens' euro partners have grown frustrated with its slack implementation of spending cuts and reforms almost two years after first receiving international aid.

Gingrich???s Space Colony Proposition Unrealistic (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Apparently the moon is the next prime real estate for U.S. citizens, or so former Speaker of the House and Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich seems to think.

In the Thursday Florida primary debate, Gingrich expanded on his previous claim that if elected president, he would make every effort to establish a space colony on the moon by 2020. What's more, it's estimated 13,000 inhabitants would be able to qualify for American citizenship.

This illustrious plan sounds a bit "spacey" to me. Just think: A presidential nominee who supposedly recognizes the economic woes that Americans have been facing and who bashes President Barack Obama for misallocation of national funds and ill-conceived solutions to bring the country back from its multitrillion-dollar deficit has the notion that American taxpayers have the means to support a colony in space.

I understand the argument that commercializing NASA and other space exploits is a compromising method to not let expensive equipment go to waste. I get that for Americans to remain a dominant world power, they must retain a presence in space.

But the convoluted part for me is how repurposing space equipment on Earth is going to ready average U.S. citizens for eventual long-term establishment in space. That begs the question of how Gingrich expects to pay for it, with so many other philanthropies vying for funding. I also wonder how Gingrich plans for Americans to remain the lone nationality represented on the moon.

The 1961 lunar landing guaranteed the U.S. a place in space race history. Chances are NASA wouldn't have made nearly the number of discoveries and strides in its 30 years if the U.S. hadn't laid the foundation early. But is a space colony the type of semi-permanent mark Americans want to make without funds to accommodate it?

It may do Gingrich well to recall another memorable point in the history of U.S. colonization, when the British colonies were established in North America but were expected to pay the same taxes as those residing in England.

Gingrich might soon realize his flat tax initiative is a bust with the anticipated tax inflation and strain a space colony would put on Americans in the U.S. The sheer amount of resources needed to sustain a colony on the moon would be astronomical. Not only would U.S. space residents lose their national identity and affiliation; I'm sure that terra firma-lovers would realize the wasted allocation of money resources to sustain their brothers in orbit. Sounds eerily similar to Gingrich's own sentiments about the current commander-in-chief.

An American-only space colony is an impressive campaign goal, but it may be a bit too lofty for Gingrich or others to achieve in the current economic climate. There's no doubt that it's a project that could take off in the distant future; after all, the U.S. did put a man on the moon. It has no chance, though, until financial feasibility catches up to American capability.

93% Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Superbly directed action from the first minute to the last! Even if I still hold the original as my favourite in the series, the sensational stunts of this film is definitely one for the record books. The jaw-dropping sequence at the Burj Khalifa hotel - a rush of adrenaline that exhilarates to the extreme - comes especially to mind. Cast-wise, it's quite the pleasure as well. British funnyman Simon Pegg provides some nice comic relief (although corny such at times), while Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner bring out their absolute A-game. And for me as a Swede, it was an incredible, if somewhat surreal joy to see Michael Nyqvist as the villain. Just a few years ago, I would have never guessed him to take the leap over to Hollywood, but I'm sure glad that he did. Especially as he's one of the finest actors that our country has to present. As for the film's front figure, I can say only this: no longer may I have any respect for Tom Cruise the person (he's still a Scientologist after all), but he certainly hasn't faded one bit as a dare-devil action star. So what it boils down to here is one of the true must-see popcorn movies of 2011. Kudos to director Brad Bird, for making the impossible possible, and granting us an invite to a sequel that breathes new life into the franchise. He really pulled out all the stops on this one, delivering a fun and energizing, balls-to-the-wall action-fest. If it doesn't raise your pulse, you are either dead or made of stone. Because as far as spy thrillers go, this is one of the coolest ever conceived.

Etta James remembered as triumphant trailblazer (AP)

GARDENA, Calif. ? Etta James was remembered at a service Saturday attended by hundreds of friends, family and fans as a woman who triumphed against all odds to break down cultural and musical barriers in a style that was unfailingly honest.

The Rev. Al Sharpton eulogized James in a rousing speech, describing her remarkable rise from poverty and pain to become a woman whose music became an enduring anthem for weddings and commercials.

Perhaps most famously, President Barack Obama and the first lady shared their first inaugural ball dance to a version of the song sung by Beyonce. Sharpton on Saturday opened his remarks by reading a statement from the president.

"Etta will be remembered for her legendary voice and her contributions to our nation's musical heritage," Obama's statement read.

The Grammy-winning singer died Jan. 20 after battling leukemia and other ailments, including dementia. She had retreated from public life in recent years, but on Saturday her legacy was on display as mourners of all ages and races converged on the City of Refuge church in Gardena, south of downtown Los Angeles.

Among the stars performing tributes to James were Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera, who told the gathering that she has included "At Last" in every concert she's performed as a tribute to her musical inspiration.

Wonder performed three songs, including "Shelter In the Rain" and a harmonica solo. James' rose-draped casket was on display, surrounded by wreaths and floral arrangements and pictures of the singer.

Sharpton, who met James when he was an up-and-coming preacher, credited her with helping break down racial barriers through her music.

"She was able to get us on the same rhythms and humming the same ballads and understanding each other's melodies way before we could even use the same hotels," Sharpton said.

He said James' fame and influence would have been unthinkable to a woman with James' background ? growing up in a broken home during segregation and at times battling her own demons.

"The genius of Etta James is she flipped the script," Sharpton said, alluding to her struggles with addiction, which she eventually overcame.

"She waited until she turned her pain into power," he said, adding that it turned her story away from being a tragic one into one of triumph.

"You beat `em Etta," Sharpton said in concluding his eulogy. "At last. At last. At last!"

The assembly roared to their feet, and would again stand to applaud performances by Wonder and Aguilera, who filled the sanctuary with their voices.

"Out of all the singers that I've ever heard, she was the one that cut right to my soul and spoke to me," Aguilera said before her performance.

Throughout the service, a portrait of James as a woman who beat the odds in pursuit of her dreams repeatedly emerged.

"Etta is special to me and for me, because she represents the life, the triumphs, the tribulations of a lot of black women all over this world," said U.S. Rep Maxine Waters, D-Calif.

"It does not matter who sang `At Last' before or after Etta. It does not matter when it was sung, or where it was sung. `At Last' was branded by Etta, the raunchy diva ? that's her signature and we will always remember her."

James won four Grammy Awards, including a lifetime achievement honor and was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. In her decades-long career, she became revered for her passionate, soulful singing voice.

She scored her first hit when she was just a teenager with the suggestive "Roll With Me, Henry," which had to be changed to "The Wallflower" in order to get airplay. Her 1967 album, "Tell Mama," became one of the most highly regarded soul albums of all time, a mix of rock and gospel music.

She rebounded from a heroin addiction to see her career surge after performing the national anthem at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. She won her first Grammy Award a decade later, and two more in 2003 and 2004.

James is survived by her husband of 42 years, Artis Mills and two sons, Donto and Sametto James.

"Mom, I love you," Donto James said during brief remarks. "When I get to the gates, can you please be there for me?"

RBS chief's taxper-funded bonus angers Britons (AP)

LONDON ? The chief executive of the part-nationalized Royal Bank of Scotland PLC will get a bonus worth about 963,000 pounds ($1.51 million), the bank announced Thursday, drawing the ire of many Britons and reviving questions over whether top finance figures are rewarded for failure.

Bonuses at RBS are particularly sensitive because British taxpayers took an 83 percent stake in the bank following a disastrous acquisition binge which saddled the company with billions' worth of rotten debt. Stephen Hester wasn't in charge when the bank nearly went bust, but he's been lavishly compensated by the taxpayer at a time when the bank is still struggling to reverse its fortunes.

RBS made a net profit of 1.2 billion pounds in the third quarter of last year but its share price has slumped and it has shed thousands of jobs.

The mass-market Daily Mail described the bonus as a million-pound "REWARD FOR FAILURE" on the front page of the paper's Friday edition, made available to journalists late Thursday.

Britain's opposition Labour Party agreed, saying in a statement that "anyone who thinks it is acceptable to award a bonus of almost 1 million pounds on top of a basic salary of 1.2 million pounds in these tough times is desperately out of touch with millions of people who are struggling to make ends meet."

Britain's Unite union said the bonus was "disgusting and offensive."

The massive awards executives give themselves ? even when their companies do badly ? has long been an embarrassment for both political parties, particularly when it happens at banks which had to be bailed out to the tune of several tens of billions of pounds in the wake of the credit crunch.

Last year Hester accepted a roughly 2 million pound bonus after his company reported a 1.1 billion pound loss for 2010, although that figure was an improvement on the catastrophic losses suffered by the bank in previous years.

Hester's bonus may have fallen by just over half, but it is still more than 36 times a Briton's average annual wage.

Would your city want a nuclear waste site?

If the price is right, would your town want a nuclear waste site?

A panel of experts said today that finding a volunteer community is the best way to pick a place for a waste repository that could outlast human civilization. The site would store spent nuclear fuel that has been piling up at the nation's 104 nuclear reactors.

The President's Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future released its final report Thursday with eight key recommendations about how to kick-start a federal waste disposal policy that it says "has been troubled for decades and has now all but completely broken down."

Congress picked Yucca Mountain, Nev., as a permanent repository in 2002, but the Obama administration nixed the plan in 2010 after disputes with state officials. Even with the closure, the Department of Energy will have spent $10 billion on Yucca Mountain by 2020, according to estimates by the General Accountability Office.

The nuclear waste panel said that it's better to convince a local town or tribe to take the facility, rather than selecting a site and then trying to convince local residents afterward.

"I don't have a secret recipe," said Allison Macfarlane, a panel member and environmental science professor at George Mason University. "But the community should get what they want, jobs, university scholarships, the options are endless."

Macfarlane cited two successful examples. In the 1970s, residents of Carlsbad, N.M., agreed to host a disposal site for waste generated by the nearby nuclear weapons labs. After decades of delays, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) began taking shipments in 1998.

The town got 1,300 jobs, several factories and a youth sports complex ? as well as $300 million in highway funds.

In Sweden, federal officials tried several times to site a long-term waste disposal site until they asked for volunteers. Two communities vied for the project, which is now under way.

Macfarlane said that state governments have to be on board before moving forward. Opposition from state officials in both Nevada and Utah killed previous plans for nuclear waste sites.

ANALYSIS: Is Nuclear Energy Safe?

Consumers have been paying a tax on their utility bills from nuclear-generated electric power to build such a long-term storage site for several decades. Katrina McMurrian is executive director of the Nuclear Waste Strategy Coalition, a group of utilities, state officials and advocacy groups pushing for a disposal location. She says now it's time for the government to step up and get the job done.

    4. Camera-nabbing leopards caught on video

"Rate-payers across the country have been paying to have this taken care of in return for a resting place established for used nuclear fuel," McMurrian said. "We simply want the government to make good on its promise."

The new report said deep geologic disposal is the best way to safely store spent nuclear fuel, material that will remain radioactive for tens of thousands of years. Big metal canisters made of either stainless steel (France), copper-steel (Sweden) or a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy (planned for Yucca Mountain) would be lowered into a mine 900 feet to 2500 feet below ground.

The canisters could be put into granite, clay or salt, as long as the surrounding formations are geologically stable, Macfarlane said. That means below potable groundwater, away from heat sources and fissures.

Ideas for putting nuclear waste under the seabed or in orbit were rejected as either in violation of international treaties (sea) or too risky (space).

"We can't send up every single rocket with a 100 percent guarantee that it won't blow up," Macfarlane said.

More college freshmen see getting good job as key goal, poll finds

Seeing their parents struggle with unemployment and other money worries over the last few years, the nation's current batch of college freshmen increasingly view a bachelor's degree as a necessary ticket to better jobs, according to a UCLA survey being released Thursday.

In responding to the "American Freshman" poll, 85.9% of first-year students across the country said that being able to land a good job is a very important reason for attending college. That is the strongest response to that question in the 40 years it has been asked and is sharply higher than the 70.4% reply in 2006, before the recession began.

The survey asks freshmen to select reasons they are pursuing higher education. For a generation, the most popular one was "to learn more about things that interest me." This year, 82.9% said that was a major motive. But since 2009, the concern about jobs has been on top.

Also setting a record was the response to a query about whether becoming very well off financially is an "essential or very important" objective. The survey showed that 79.6% of the students described such affluence as a compelling goal, up from the pre-recession response of 73.4% in 2006 and double the levels during the more counter-cultural 1970s.

"I think it's understandable. Like everybody in the country, these students are reacting to a time of recession," said John H. Pryor, managing director of UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute, which conducts the annual survey.

But he cautioned that it would be wrong to assume that the students want to make money just for luxurious lifestyles. In fact, the report also shows that, compared with students 40 years ago, current freshmen say they are much more interested in having children. So, Pryor said, they may be more aware of what it costs to raise and educate a family.

"They may want to make sure their kids can go to their first-choice colleges without a lot of loans, as opposed to buying the plasma TV and the BMW," he said.

Begun in 1966, the poll is considered the nation's most comprehensive look at college students' attitudes. Nearly 204,000 incoming freshmen at 270 four-year colleges and universities decided to participate at the start of the current school year.

Compared with classes ahead of them, today's recession-era freshmen reported being more studious and sober during high school. These students may fear that bad grades and rejections from good colleges could lead to economic insecurity, analysts said.

Those who reported that they studied or did homework for six or more hours a week as high school seniors rose to 39.5%, up from 34.7% in 2009. In the same period, the share of students who said they drank beer frequently or occasionally in high school dropped from 39.5% to 35.4% and those who said they spent some time "partying" every week during high school declined from 69.7% to 65.3%.

Liberal social causes are becoming more popular on campuses, with supportive responses to many of these questions on the rise.

For example, 71.3% said they supported gay and lesbian couples' right to marry, and 60.7% said abortion should be kept legal. Additionally, 49.1% backed the legalization of marijuana.

Cat Cora Calls Out Cynthia Nixon, View on Homosexuality as "Dangerous"

Following Cynthia Nixon's declaration that homosexuality - at least in her case - is a choice, the reaction within the gay community has been strong, swift and mixed.

The harshest rebuke of the Sex and the City star has likely come from celebrity chef Cat Cora, who appeared yesterday on The Talk and said:

"I'm gay, and I was born this way," adding of Nixon's view and how it could impact others: "I really feel like it was dangerous and irresponsible of Cynthia, especially in this environment today when so many young people are taking their lives."

Cynthia Nixon, No Hair

Continued Cora, making a plea to the actress who is currently starring on Broadway:

"I know growing up as a young gay person how much you hate yourself, how much you already think you're different. And for someone to say, ‘It's a choice, you can be this way or that way,' I think it's dangerous and I ask Cynthia to please, reach out to the community and say - to all the people who do hate themselves right now, all the young kids who are impressionable - to say, ‘You're OK, take it one day at a time, it gets better.'"

Nixon has been in relationships with both men and women, but dismisses the classification of "bisexual."I completely feel that when I was in relationships with men, I was in love and in lust with those men," she told The Daily Beast. "And then I met [girlfriend Christine Marinoni] and I fell in love and lust with her. I am completely the same person and I was not walking around in some kind of fog. I just responded to the people in front of me the way I truly felt."

Finally, in a Huffington Post article, Tracy Baim - editor of the Chicag-based LGBT publication The Windy City Times - writes:

"The bottom line is that those who hate us, want to cure us, or even kill us don't really take the time to understand these nuances.

"Yes, there are some who advocate a 'nature made us this way' argument to help us accept ourselves. But others still try to get gays to suppress their sexuality, or transgender people to suppress their gender identity, no matter how they got that way."

Tracy Morgan Collapses at Sundance Film Festival, Hosptialized

Tracy Morgan went from honoree to hospital attendee in Utah last night. But the 30 Rock star should be okay.

The actor fell unconscious soon after accepting an award at the Creative Coalition Spotlight Awards, which was part of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City. He was rushed to a local hospital via ambulance immediately after collapsing.

Zany Tracy Morgan

While initial reports indicated that Morgan was drunk at the event, a spokeswoman for Park City Medical Center tells TMZ no foreign substances were found in the star's system. So, what happened?

"From a combination of exhaustion and altitude, Tracy is seeking medical attention," his rep, Lewis Kay, said in a statement. "He is with his fiance [Megan Wallover] and grateful to the Park City Medical Center for their care. Any reports of Tracy consuming alcohol are 100% false."

Germany and France seek relaxation of bank capital rules: report (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? France and Germany will call on Monday for a relaxation of global bank capital rules to prevent lending to the real economy being choked off, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

German finance minister Wolfgang Schauble and his French counterpart Francois Baroin will urge special treatment for banks that own insurance companies, according to a joint paper seen by the newspaper.

The pair will also urge important elements of the Basel III guidelines on capital requirements to be watered down to mitigate any "negative effect" on growth, according to the article.

The FT said the paper calls for a three-year delay to the mandatory deadline to disclose leverage ratios, a measure of bank borrowing and risk.

"European institutions should agree on achieving the EU financial market regulation agenda while taking due consideration of its impact on the financing of the real economy," the draft proposal states.

The FT said the German-Franco move is likely to infuriate policymakers in London, who have been fighting hard to stop French-led attempt to dilaute the Basel III accord.

Banks across the world will have to follow Basel III accords for disclosing the size and quality of their capital safety buffers from 2013 to help reassure investors they are stable.

(AP Photo/Darko Bandic)

(AP) ? Croatians voted Sunday in favor of joining the European Union despite a poor turnout for the referendum ? a sign of how much the debt-stricken 27-nation bloc has lost its appeal within countries aspiring to join.

Croatia's state referendum commission said that with nearly all ballots counted, about 66 percent of those who took part in the referendum answered "yes" to the question: "Do you support the membership of the Republic of Croatia in the European Union?"

About 33 percent were against, while the rest of the ballots were invalid. About 47 percent of eligible voters took part in the referendum, illustrating voters' apathy toward the EU. That compares to 84 percent who voted in a referendum for Croatia's independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1992.

"The people are obviously tired," Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said. "It would have been better that the turnout was larger, but that's reality."

It was among the lowest turnouts in any of the EU states that have held accession referendums before they joined. Nearly 46 percent took part in the vote in Hungary, while more than 90 percent voted in Malta.

Milanovic said: "This is a historic decision, the turning point in our history, as from now on, everything, including success or failure, depends only on us."

The EU congratulated Croatians on their vote, saying it's good news for the whole Balkan region.

"The upcoming accession of Croatia sends a clear signal to the whole region of southeastern Europe," it said in a statement. "It shows that through political courage and determined reforms, EU membership is within reach."

Croatian anti-EU activists were furious.

"The turnout shows that Croatia has turned its back on the EU," said war veteran Zeljko Sacic, who led a campaign against membership. "This referendum is illegitimate. We will never recognize it."

Croatia signed an EU accession treaty last year and will become its 28th member in July 2013 after all the bloc's states ratify the deal.

The Croats were deeply divided before the referendum.

Those who were for the EU say their Balkan country's troubled economy ? burdened by recession, a euro48-billion ($61-billion) foreign debt and a 17 percent unemployment rate ? will revive because of access to wider European markets and job opportunities that the membership should bring.

"It's a big moment in our history ... we are joining more successful countries in Europe," Croatia's President Ivo Josipovic said after casting his ballot. "I'm happy that Europe will become my home."

Opponents said Croatia has nothing to gain by entering the bloc, which is fighting off the bankruptcy of some of its members. They said that Croatia will lose its sovereignty and the national identity it fought for in a war for independence from Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

"I voted against, because I don't think we'll do well in the EU," said university student Matea Kolenc, 23. "I heard a lot of bad things about the EU, its economic situation and what it has to offer."

The Balkan nation started negotiating its EU entry six years ago, but since then the popularity of the bloc has faded, as Croats realized that EU membership would not automatically lead to prosperity.

Many in Croatia ? and the rest of the EU ? also wonder what is the bloc going to gain from the country, which is rife with corruption and has economic woes that are among the deepest in the Balkans.

Croatia's credit rating was last year reduced to a step above junk by ratings agency Standard & Poor's which cited its deteriorating fiscal position and external financing for its decision. If it enters the EU in 2013, Croatia won't be adopting the euro currency for several more years, and is unlikely to contribute to its further plunge.

In a sign of deep divisions in Croatia over the membership, police clashed Saturday in downtown Zagreb with a group of nationalist protesters who attempted to take down an EU flag.

Numerous anti-EU graffiti, some saying "Stop the Destruction, No to EU," appeared Sunday on the walls of voting stations in the Croatian Adriatic coast port of Split, the hotbed of nationalists. Police covered the signs with white paint.

Croatian officials, who have launched a pro-EU campaign before the referendum, warned that a "no" vote would have deprived the country of the much-needed accession funds, and that even the payment of pensions for retirees and war veterans could be in jeopardy.

Croatia has received around euro150 million ($193 million) in pre-accession assistance since 2007. It is to receive another euro150 million for 2012 and euro95 million ($122 million) in 2013.

Croatia's pro-government media have also tried to scare Croatians by saying that if they reject the EU, they would have to return to some sort of a Balkan union with their former wartime foe, Serbia, which has been struggling to gain a candidacy status in the bloc.

The approval rating for EU membership has also dropped to 52 percent in Serbia because of Germany's conditioning for the candidacy with the de facto recognizing of the independence of its former Kosovo province which declared independence in 2008.

'Extinct' monkey rediscovered in Borneo by new expedition

Friday, January 20, 2012

An international team of scientists has found one of the rarest and least known primates in Borneo, Miller's Grizzled Langur, a species which was believed to be extinct or on the verge of extinction. The team's findings, published in the American Journal of Primatology, confirms the continued existence of this endangered monkey and reveals that it lives in an area where it was previously not known to exist.

Miller's Grizzled Langur (Presbytis hosei canicrus) is part of the small primate genus Presbytis, found across Borneo, Sumatra, Java and the Thai-Malay Peninsula. In Borneo, P.h. canicrus is only found in a small corner of the county's north east and its habitat has suffered from fires, human encroachment and conversion of land for agriculture and mining.

The team's expedition took to them to Wehea Forest in East Kalimantan, Borneo, a large 38,000 ha area of mostly undisturbed rainforest. Wehea contains at least nine known species of non-human primate, including the Bornean orangutan and gibbon.

"Discovery of P.h canicrus was a surprise since Wehea Forest lies outside of this monkey's known range. Future research will focus on estimating the population density for P.h. canicrus in Wehea and the surrounding forest," said Brent Loken, from Simon Fraser University Canada. "Concern that the species may have gone extinct was first raised in 2004, and a search for the monkey during another expedition in 2008 supported the assertion that the situation was dire."

By conducting observations at mineral licks where animals congregate and setting up camera traps in several locations, the expedition confirmed that P. h canicrus continues to survive in areas west of its previously recorded geographic range. The resulting photos provide the first solid evidence demonstrating that its geographic range extends further than previously thought.

"It was a challenge to confirm our finding as there are so few pictures of this monkey available for study," said Loken. "The only description of Miller's Grizzled Langur came from museum specimens. Our photographs from Wehea are some of the only pictures that we have of this monkey."

"East Kalimantan can be a challenging place to conduct research, given the remoteness of many remaining forested areas, so it isn't surprising that so little is known about this primate," said Dr. Stephanie Spehar, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. "We are very grateful to our local partners. This discovery represents the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of Western and Indonesian scientists, students, NGOs, as well as local communities and government."

"While our finding confirms the monkey still exists in East Kalimantan, there is a good chance that it remains one of the world's most endangered primates," concluded Loken. "I believe it is a race against time to protect many species in Borneo. It is difficult to adopt conservation strategies to protect species when we don't even know the extent of where they live. We need more scientists in the field working on understudied species such as Miller's Grizzled Langur, clouded leopards and sun bears."

Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA)

For those who are interested:

Today, I stopped by the Capitol Hill Complex and visited the offices of some representatives and senators, urging them to oppose SOPA and PIPA. I spoke to staff and left my contact information. (Yes, I gave them my real name and phone number.) I explained that I am a writer (still working on my fifth novel, actually), and while I am certainly very much concerned about protecting my intellectual property and copyright, these bills are NOT the way to do that. "This is like taking a sledgehammer to kill an ant," I told one staffer. "Sure, you might kill the ant -- or you might miss -- but there's going to be a whole lot of other ants, and you might also take off your own toe in the process."

For those who are curious, I did mention RolePlayGateway. I talked about the community that many of our members have found on this site, and emphasized that there are multiple sites like ours, all of which will be destroyed by these bills, even if the vast majority of people never engage in copyright infringement and the administration and staff take all reasonable measures to prevent it. So there are now people in Congress who have heard of our website.

Jan. 2012: I'm researching roleplaying and need any roleplayers to take an anonymous survey. It takes an average of 25 minutes. This is part 1 of 2. The second survey will be released soon.

"Funny you should mention prisoners: This afternoon we were talking about playing out a hostage situation in the bar and we were like 'only Ylanne would play the victim.'"

Lose a job, prepare for really long job search

Bureau of Labor Statistics

The median amount of time it's taking for unemployed people to find new jobs is about 21 weeks.

Here?s the good news: Employers are hiring more workers than they are firing these days, a welcome turnaround from the darkest days of the Great Recession.

Here?s the bad news: If you are among those unlucky enough to lose your job now, you'd better prepare for a long job search.

The median duration of unemployment was 21 weeks or about five months as of December. That means half of all unemployed workers had been without a job for more than five months.

That?s actually an improvement from mid-2010, when the median duration of unemployment peaked at 25 weeks. But it?s still nearly three times what it was before the recession began and much higher than in previous tough job markets.

The main problem: There just aren?t enough jobs to go around.

Last year the economy added an average of about 137,000 jobs a month. While that?s better than when the economy was shedding jobs, it wasn?t nearly enough to absorb the millions of unemployed and new workers entering the market, said Sylvia Allegretto, an economist with the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment at the University of California, Berkeley.

?That rate of job growth is simply not fast enough to really soak up all those who are unemployed and underemployed, and those who have left the labor market and will be coming back to the labor market,? Allegretto said.

?

Allegretto doesn?t expect the situation to improve?much soon for the long-term unemployed.

That?s partly because there are still 13 million people who are unemployed and seeking work. It?s also because there are many other Americans out there who may have stopped looking for a job because the market was so bad, and will start looking again if the market improves.

Those excruciatingly long job searches are an especially big problem for older workers. The median duration of unemployment for 20- to 24-year-olds was 16.3 weeks in December, compared with 31.4 weeks for 55- to 64-year-olds.

Sony schedules PSN maintenance today, wants you to know this time it's on purpose

Sony knows you're likely scarred for life after its many security snafus, so it's doing all it can to keep you in the loop in regards to its PSN. The network will be experiencing a temporary outage today to make room for "routine scheduled maintenance" starting at 11AM ET and ending at approximately midnight. As usual in these scenarios, you won't have access to any PlayStation services on your PS3 or PSP, including PlayStation Home and Sony's Music and Video Unlimited offerings. That said, if you were shootin' and slashin' fools before the downtime, you should have no hassle continuing with your current session -- though access to any of the aforementioned services is still out of the question. Desperate to know exactly when the PSN will be back up and running? Keep it locked on the Playstation Twitter feed to find out.

Diaz hits late FTs, Nebraska upsets No. 11 Indiana (AP)

LINCOLN, Neb. ? Jorge Brian Diaz made two free throws with 11 seconds left to give Nebraska the lead, Indiana couldn't score on its last possession, and the struggling Cornhuskers upset No. 11 Indiana 70-69 on Wednesday night for the Hoosiers' third straight loss.

Indiana (15-3, 3-4) squandered a 13-point, second-half lead as Nebraska (10-8, 2-5) posted its biggest victory as a new member of the Big Ten.

Jordan Hulls missed on a driving layup, then recovered the loose ball and missed a desperation shot from in front of his bench as time ran out. The ball bounced back toward Hulls, and he kicked it in defeat as Nebraska's student section emptied and rushed the court.

Bo Spencer led the Huskers with 23 points, Toney McCray had 11 and Diaz and Dylan Talley 10 apiece. Cody Zeller led the Hoosiers with 18 points, and Hulls added 12.

The Hoosiers had been hoping to break out of a mini funk from losses to Minnesota and Ohio State after a 15-1 start that included upsets of then-No. 1 Kentucky and the then-No. 2 Buckeyes.

But Nebraska, coming off a five-point loss at Wisconsin on Sunday, wouldn't quit after the Hoosiers looked to have taken control.

The Hoosiers were up 69-66 with 39 seconds left after Hulls made two free throws.

Spencer missed on the other end, but Talley followed with a putback, and it was a one-point game.

Brandon Richardson fouled Hulls in the backcourt on Indiana's next possession, and the point guard missed the front end of a one-and-one with 24 seconds to play.

That allowed Nebraska to set up its winning possession.

Richardson, who rebounded Hulls' missed free throws, fed Diaz and the 6-foot-11 center went right to the basket. He got fouled by Hulls and then made the tying free throw. After Indiana called timeout, he calmly swished the go-ahead free throw.

Indiana was within seconds of posting its first Big Ten road win against an opponent other than Penn State under fourth-year coach Tom Crean. The Hoosiers are 2-29 in conference road games since Crean took over.

Playing in Lincoln for the first time since 1942, the Hoosiers led by eight points in the first half and were up 41-34 at the half after shooting 62 percent from the floor. Spencer scored 15 points in the first 20 minutes to keep the Huskers in it.

But the Huskers went more than 5 minutes without a field goal to start the second half and fell behind by 13 points.

Indiana, however, scored just one field goal in the last 6 minutes.
